An NFT horse is the central feature of the DeRace metaverse. Horse owners can earn various payouts through racing, breeding, renting or trading their horses and have fun at the same time!

Let’s take a closer look into the race mechanics and how hidden DeRace NFT horse parameter — stamina — influence the race outcome.

🏁 General race mechanics

Every race for every horse is an accumulation of dice rolls with horse hidden statistics — speed, stamina and reaction time — acting as modifiers.

Each furlong is split into 10 “dice rolls” for every horse, meaning that horse will get 20 calculations for 2 furlong races and 100 for a 10 furlong race. This approach allows us to add additional modifiers to existing algorithm in the future and sends an important message: having good stats does not automatically mean that you will always win the race. It means that you have a greater chance to perform well but just like in real life — anything can happen.

Inner workings of stamina 🐎

The stamina of a DeRace NFT horse is an important factor of horse performance on the race track. It’s one of the 3 hidden parameters which has a significant impact on the race outcome.

During the initial mint, every horse is randomly assigned a stamina value between 50 to 100 which doesn’t change over time. After leaving the starting gate, horse performance depends on 2 features: speed and stamina. Stamina decreases gradually with each 10th of a furlong for every horse. After the horse’s stamina is fully depleted, the horse is running purely on the speed which at the same time is decreasing due to the loss of stamina.

To bring our races closer to real life, different race track surfaces require different amounts of stamina to be used to race on it. For example, stamina decreases faster when an NFT horse is running on the dirt track, compared to the synthetic track.

Stamina use case examples in a race:

2 horses with same speed and different stamina (same race)

The horse with higher stamina on average would perform better on the longer race track compared to the one with lower stamina. However, on the shorter track they would perform similarly (RNG factor included).

2 horses with different speed but the same stamina (same race)

On average, a horse with higher speed would outperform the horse with lower speed as their stamina would deplete similarly.

Horse’s stamina consumption on different tracks

Different surfaces mean different stamina consumption. Dirt surface is harder to race on compared to synthetic one, which means that every horse depletes his stamina faster on the dirt surface. Of course, since the race outcome doesn’t depend only on stamina, the speed should also be taken into account when speculating the outcome of a race.

🥁 Fast forward to the future: performance boosting items

With the launch of the performance boosting assets, new possibilities arise!

Every owner has an option to equip their horses with horse wearable items to ensure a more positive racing outcome. Some of the items will be dedicated to increasing the horse’s speed and some to increasing stamina during the race. You will be able to choose how to equip your horse to ensure the best performance.

Keep your eyes peeled for more details on the inner mechanics of performance boosting assets!
